Bangkok Emergency - Army Crackdown
Just as we thought it was safe to go back in the water trouble erupts in Bangkok.
A protest by an anti government faction ( the Redshirts ) is getting out of hand. Luckily, at the moment, is it quite localised but there are rumours that it will spread. I went out and got some pics yesterday and found the protesters quite jovial. However, today, after a night of drinking, they are totally the opposite.
Now the Thai army are cracking down on protesters, shots have been fired, people hurt. CS gas used. There are reports of deaths, but they are unsubstantiated as far as I know. The Redshirts have seized two LPG tankers and are threatening to blow them up. As I type this deaths have now been confirmed. So sad because it is the time of fun - the Thai new year. Songkran !!
Last night the tourist entertainment areas were open, with a great water fight outside Oasis Bar on Sukhumvit Soi 13. Hopefully the crackdown will not affect these areas.... we will see tonight.
UPDATE: 2300hrs Monday 13th April - entertainment areas open as usual. Thats Patpong, Nana and Soi Cowboy. Not affected in any way by the state of emergency. Lots of water !! Go have fun.
The army seems to be restoring order, although there has been serious confrontations they have not been as widespread as a lot of media outlets make out. There has not been any trouble in the main tourist areas or at the airport.
